Dementia Awareness Week events in and around Brecon

Dementia Awareness Week events run from May 17 to May 23rd in Brecon, culminating on Saturday, May 23rd, in a celebratory concert to mark Brecon being officially recognised by the Alzheimer's Society as 'working towards becoming dementia-friendly'. Well done to everyone in Brecon who is helping us achieve this!

Dementia Awareness Week events on Sunday, May 17

Awareness-raising event: Brecon

What: Stop by and see our volunteers and find out more about dementia-friendly activities and support in Brecon.

Where and when: Brecon Bandstand from 2-4pm.

Dementia Awareness Week events on Monday, May 18

Music and Memories – singing workshop taster session: Brecon

What: Drop in singing session for people with, or caring for someone with, memory problems.

Where and when: The Muse, Old Museum, Glamorgan Street, Brecon from 10.30am-12 noon.

Alzheimer's Society awareness event: Crickhowell

What: Stop by to check out the dementia awareness display on Crickhowell High Street and chat to Kate West about help and initiatives in the area.

Where and when: Crickhowell High Street from 10am-12noon.

'High tea and harmony' at Brecon Cathedral

What: Drop in event – all welcome. Listen to the singing group, Harmony, while enjoying a delicious tea. Free of charge. Organised by the Diocese.

Where and when: Brecon Cathedral Heritage Centre, 3pm.

Dementia Awareness Week events on Tuesday, May 19

Tea and Chat session – with a visit by the Older People's Commissioner's engagement officer: Brecon MIND

What: The Older People's Commissioner's engagement officer will be dropping in to our regular 'Tea and Chat' session to find out more about how these sessions help those with dementia and their carers and families. Regulars and new attenders welcome.

Where and when: Brecon MIND, Ty Croeso 10:30-12 noon.

The Older People's Commissioner will also be visiting Trenewydd Care Home – and Llanfaes School to find out how they've signed up to become dementia friends. The school's choir is also taking part in our concert on Saturday, May 23.

Dementia advice and support session: Bronllys Day Hospital

What: Drop-in session at Bronllys Day Hospital – come along for positive advice and support.

Where and when: Bronllys Day Hospital, Llewellyn Ward, from 11am-3pm.

Alzheimer's Society awareness-raising event: Talgarth Town Hall

What: Stop by and meet the local Dementia Support Worker and find out more about dementia-friendly activities and support in the area.

Where and when: Talgarth Town Hall, from 10am-12noon.

Dementia Friends session: Llanfrynach

What: Small things make a big difference to those living with dementia. Become a Dementia Friend and find out how to turn your understanding into action. Everyone welcome.

What: Our AGM is open to all. Come along and get involved in our initiatives.

What: Talk by the chair of Making Brecon a Dementia Friendly Community, Rhiannon Davies.

Dementia-Friendly Coffee Morning: Brecon Barracks

What: Drop in to a coffee morning and dementia-friendly Brecon awareness-raising session.

'Inter-generational' art project: Llangorse

What: The children of Llangorse school have teamed up with Brookside Care Home on this 'inter-generational' art project. Following on from an earlier Dementia Friends session, Year 5 will meet with the artists in preparation for a visit to Brookside Care Home.

Where and when: The Library, Ship Street, Brecon from 11am-12noon.

CONCERT: Music at Brecon Guildhall with Brecon Male Choir and the children of Llanfaes School

What: Celebrate Brecon being recognised by the Alzheimer's Society as the first place in Wales to be officially 'working towards becoming a dementia-friendly community'. There will be music from Brecon's Cor Meibion Aberhonddu (the Brecon and District Male Choir) and the Llanfaes Primary School choir. Sarah Harman, who runs our 'music and memories' sessions will also be 'Singing For Life' with accompaniest Christine Morgan.

Tickets cost £6.50 (£4 concessions) and are available from The Hours Cafe and Bookshop on Ship Street and Cariad on The Bulwark.
