Since it's inception in 2014, Brecon Dementia Friendly Community volunteers have been running free Dementia Friends Sessions for our community. To date there are 17 Dementia Friends Champions who have delivered 164 information sessions creating over 2563 Dementia Friends. Click here to read all about the Dementia Friends initiative. But does it really make a difference? In a week that has seen the number of Dementia Friends pass the 1.5 million mark across Wales, England and Northern Ireland, we would like to share the story below from one of our Dementia Friends who speaks so powerfully of the difference a Dementia Friends Information Session made in her life.
"Thank you so much to Rhiannon for providing an inspirational Dementia Friends Awareness training session. The training was supportive and knowledgable, giving participants practical and helpful information. It gave me an introduction to dementia that has transformed my relationship with someone who has Alzheimer's.Two points stood out for me: a person with dementia remembers feelings even if they don't remember people; and you should enter and accept that person's world. Consequently I visited Edna with a completely different attitude. It didn't matter that she didn't remember who I was. It didn't matter that she thought it was the 1940s and she'd just left school. I entered her world, showed interest in it, and enjoyed listening to her stories. A care worker said "It's lovely to hear her chatting.” What had previously been an awkward encounter is now a positive experience for both of us. Thank you!"
