Llanfaes Primary School has achieved official recognition of Working towards Becoming Dementia Friendly, and their commitment was demonstrated when they held a dementia-themed coffee morning as part of this year's school eisteddfod.
Year 5 and 6 pupils, who are all Dementia Friends, designed posters and leaflets, they researched famous people with dementia and distributed the information they had gathered, and they compiled flyers giving hints and tips on how to avoid dementia. The children also made their own Memory Bookcase, (as used in a Dementia Friends sessions with young people), and during the morning they carried the bookcase around and invited people to add their personal memories.
The pupils involved have started planning an inter-generational project with Trenewydd Care Home and a number of the residents attended the coffee morning and thoroughly enjoyed it, especially hearing the children sing. In addition to three Welsh songs, the choir sang With A Little Help From My Friends and Lean On Me, in recognition of the day's theme. Some of the pupils enthusiastically asked visitors to buy our new Brecon Dementia Friendly car stickers and raised an impressive £37!
Some examples of the pupils' work is pictured below.
