Friday was a great day for the Brecon Area Dementia Friendly Community. Llanfaes Year 6 pupils, who are involved in our inter-generational project with Trenewydd Care Home, along with Year 5, did a Memory Walk to raise money for our group.
We started the day in Trenewydd with a warm-up led by the multi-talented Dementia Friends Champion Donna Gair, and some of the residents joined in with great enthusiasm from their chairs! We then completed a very scenic 5k walk, and lunching under cover of the trees when the rain came down didn't damp anyone's enthusiasm! A huge thanks to GSM Automotive for sponsoring our tee-shirts, and also to Design4Ewe for making them.
We then walked back to Trenewydd for a celebration, but we weren't just celebrating the Memory Walk! We were also able to tell the children that we have been shortlisted in the Alzheimers Society's National Awards (England & Wales), in the category 'Young Persons(s) Outstanding Contribution'. We couldn't be more thrilled and excited!
Whatever the outcome this is a real tribute to all of the children who've been involved from the start (and we're now on our third Year 6 cohort), to the commitment of Llanfaes School as a whole and staff and residents of Trenewydd. The results will be announced at an event in London on 30th November, which will be attended by Llanfaes Head, Karen Lawrence, and Joan Brown, Joint Chair of Brecon Area Dementia Friendly Community - so watch this space!
