Update on Dementia Friendly Sessions in Schools

Local schools, including Governors, staff and pupils, have shown a real commitment to increasing awareness of Dementia and to supporting us in establishing a Dementia Friendly generation in and around Brecon.  Dementia Champion, Joan Brown, has been continuing her inter-generational work in schools and provides an update on the projects. Follow the link below to read about it!

Building on previous Dementia Friends sessions, the latest sessions delivered during recent months include:

  • Staff and Governors from Mount Street Infants School
  • Year 5 in Llangors Church in Wales School
  • Year 9 in Christ College
  • Year 7 in Brecon High School (4 sessions)
  • Year 4 in Mount Street Infants School

For the session to pupils in Mount Street Infants, five Junior Dementia Ambassadors from Year 6 in Llanfaes Community Primary School came along and supported the younger children in engaging with the exercises and in understanding the messages involved. The Ambassadors loved doing this and were a real asset in the session; we will repeat this where appropriate in future sessions.

Everyone who attended showed a real interest in the issues and were happy to make a commitment to 'turn understanding into action', and we made 196 new Dementia Friends during these sessions!

Further sessions are planned and we aim to develop more inter-generational projects. Watch this space!
