We are delighted to announce that Llanfaes CP School has won the award for 'Outstanding Contribution by Young Persons' for their contribution to creating a dementia friendly community. The award, from the Alzheimer’s Society, recognises Llanfaes CP School, which has been a beacon in its commitment to creating a Dementia Friendly Generation since 2014, especially via the inter-generational project which we set up with Trenewydd Care Home in April 2015. Joan Brown, Chair of Brecon Area Dementia Friendly Community says “We are now on our third cohort of year 6 pupils and, without exception, the children involved have enjoyed their time with their Trenewydd friends, who absolutely love the weekly visits and shared activities.”
Llanfaes CP School has set an example which has already been followed within Brecon, with two further inter-generational projects established during recent months, one with Priory CiW School and Morgannwg House, and another with Llangorse CP School and Brookside Care Home; both of these projects are hugely successful and thoroughly enjoyed and appreciated by all concerned.
It is hoped that this award will help inspire and encourage other schools across Powys to work towards becoming Dementia Friendly and to join us in creating a Dementia Friendly Generation.
