Brecon Mountain Rescue takes a proactive approach to dementia

Earlier this year we delivered a Dementia Friends session to the Brecon Mountain Rescue team, at which 37 team members became Dementia Friends. Deputy Team Leader Mark Jones, has since been in touch for some support.

Mark has added a team exercise to Brecon Mountain Rescue training programme that includes searching for and rescuing a person with dementia. This will take place at Brynich Farm later in September, in the form of a lowland search and rescue operation.

Two volunteers, with first hand experience of dementia, will act out the roles of a missing person with dementia who has mild injuries and a family member who will act as an informant and assist the search managers.

"Many of the team who attended the Dementia Friends session have personal experience of dementia, either through family or friends, and so it really struck a chord", said Mark Jones.

"Searches for missing persons living with dementia account for over 5% of our calls and are increasing each year. Knowing there is a local group of volunteers to help us run this exercise provides a much-needed opportunity that will benefit both us and the wider community."
