Lewis Lloyd, on behalf of The Children's Commissioner for Wales and in partnership with The Older People's Commissioner, recently visited Trenewydd Care Home in order to make a video featuring the inter-generational project between the home and Llanfaes CP School. They did this to promoting projects like these and to encourage other schools and care homes to get involved. You can follow the link below and then read more about the project below.
This particular inter-generational project was established in 2015 between year 6 pupils and Trenewydd residents and now involves the third cohort of year 6 children from Llanfaes. Everyone involved - residents, pupils, Llanfaes and Trenewydd staff, residents' families, Dementia Friends Champion - all recognise the exceptional benefits of children and older people mixing, communicating and sharing fun activities. The children and residents have formed genuine and lasting friendships. They enjoy each other's company and learn from each other, and staff say that the residents look forward to these weekly sessions more than anything else; Thursday has become the highlight of their week! Similarly the pupils love the sessions too, and some have said they wish they could visit their Trenewydd friends every day!
This is one of three inter-generational projects that have been established in Brecon,, and planning is underway to roll this valuable and highly valued initiative out to other schools across Powys. If anyone would like more information or to discuss it further, please email Joan Brown at firstname.lastname@example.org or call 07533 768575
