Dementia Friends

Most people, particularly in the early stages of dementia, say they want to keep going out and using local shops, services and our wealth of leisure, cultural and spiritual resources. But people living with dementia lose confidence in themselves, and worry about how they will manage these day-to-day things that you and I take for granted.

A Dementia Friend learns a little bit more about what it's like to live with dementia and then turns that understanding into action - anyone of any age can be a Dementia Friend. From helping someone to find the right bus to spreading the word about dementia on social media, every action counts.

Dementia Friends is a national initiative that is being run by the Alzheimer's Society. It is funded by the government, and aims to improve people's understanding of dementia and its effects. Friends information sessions are run by local, trained volunteer Dementia Friend Champions. Each information session is free, lasts about one hour and can be done individually for your shop, business group or organisation, at a time to suit. They are interactive, they’re fun - and suitable for all ages!

We have 17 trained Dementia Friends Champions in Brecon and so far we have run 185 information sessions. We have created over 2848 Dementia Friends.

Some of the Dementia Friends Champions are linked to organisations or businesses and are running Dementia Friends sessions in-house, for example at Lloyds bank, Dyfed-Powys Police and Brecon Medical Practice.

In August 2014 Dementia Friends Champions at Mid and West Wales Fire Service started their programme of Dementia Friends sessions for the 250 firefighters in South Powys.

We would love to hear from any community groups, organisations, shops and businesses that would like a Dementia Friends session.  We also have a rolling programme of public Dementia Friends information sessions. For the dates and locations of these session see our events page.

You can also register your interest in becoming a Dementia Friend or a Dementia Friend Champion, on our Get Involved page.
