Local schools lend their support

Staff and pupils of local schools have opened their doors to Dementia Champion Joan Brown and are keen to help as Brecon strives to become Wales' first Dementia Friendly Community.

Llanfaes_School_staff.JPGDementia Friends information sessions are provided free to any organisations or groups across Brecon and help to give people a better understanding of dementia and the small things they can do to support people living with the condition.

Dementia Champion Joan Brown has recently delivered an information session to staff and governors in Llanfaes Primary School (pictured above) and in January will be speaking directly to year 5 and 6 pupils.    Joan said  "The head and staff are really committed to becoming a Dementia Friendly school and projects are being planned for the children following the Dementia Friends sessions."  Joan has also been invited to have a Dementia Friends information stand at the Christmas fair.

Brecon High School are also supporting the initiative.  Joan has been invited to deliver Dementia Friends sessions as part of the Year 9 pupils' Skills Day on 12th December, for Year 8 on the 26th of January 2015 and for Year 7 on the 16th June 2015.

"We are delighted to have the support of the schools" said Joan "Developing this inter-generational link is so valuable.  If we can enable children to grow up with an understanding of dementia this will be of personal benefit to them as well as helping them to become part of a Dementia Friendly Brecon."

We will keep you updated as the initiative spreads to other schools in the area!
