Priory Church in Wales School is the latest primary school in the Brecon area to commit to becoming Dementia Friendly. Staff recently attended an awareness-raising session resulting in making another 15 Dementia Friends. Year 5 and 6 pupils will be having their sessions on 14th June, following which plans are in the pipeline to establish an inter-generational project with Morgannwg House, so watch this space for updates on developments!
Two groups of scouts in Brecon have recently attended Dementia Friends Awareness Sessions, delivered by Joan Brown, Joint Chair of Brecon Dementia Friendly Community, which they appeared to enjoy and find interesting. At the end of each session all of the scouts committed to taking actions as Dementia Friends and were keen to share what they'd learned with their families. 29 new Dementia Friends were made, further strengthening Brecon's growing Dementia Friendly generation.
Tommy Dunne is co-chair of the highly successful and effective Liverpool SURF Group, which is run by and for people living with dementia and their carers. SURF Liverpool has had a huge impact on the lives of those involved, not only providing much needed support and advice but also having input to a range of statutory and third sector organisations which have an impact on those affected by dementia, and thereby influencing services and developments.
In addition to his pivotal role in Liverpool SURF, Tommy is hugely active and influential on the board of the Dementia Action Alliance and as a member of the DAA national and local transport groups. Tommy has given presentations to conferences in Holland, Belgium and Hungary and at various events across the UK. Tommy can be seen on YouTube in a film made by the Department for Health, "Meet Tommy Dunne".
Joan Brown, co-chair of Brecon Area Dementia Friendly Community has had the privilege of attending a SURF meeting and of getting to know Tommy and his lovely wife Joyce, who is shortlisted for Merseyside Women of the Year 2016, and describes them both as inspirational. Joan will be attending the next SURF meeting on 3rd June and Brecon Area DFC is hoping to establish a SURF group locally in the coming months based on the Liverpool model.
