Safeguarding Conference supports dementia friendly Churches

On 21st October 2014, dementia featured in the Dare 2 Care Conference at Brecon Cathedral

The potential for creating Dementia Friendly Churches was a clear message given out at the recent Safeguarding Conference in Brecon Cathedral. Organised by the Diocese of Swansea and Brecon, with support from Brecon Dementia Friendly Community, Dare 2 Care was not just a catchy title, it was a challenge to everyone in the Diocese to reach out and care.

A number of safeguarding issues were introduced, including dementia. We began the day wondering how we were to be challenged and we finished the day enthusiastic but recognizing that there is a huge amount to do.

Relevant suggested actions from the day:

  • Become a Dementia friendly Church.
  • Train as a Dementia Champion.
  • Ask a speaker to deliver a Dementia Friends session at a church event or lunch club. ¬†
  • Develop a relationship with the police and get briefing on Scams to pass on to members of the congregation
