Below is a message from Joan Brown, Joint-Chair of Brecon Area Dementia Friendly Community, following her visit to Liverpool SURF:-
I just have to write something as I feel so inspired after attending my second Liverpool SURF meeting. For anyone who doesn't know about SURF, (Service User Reference Forum), it's a group run by and for people living with dementia and their carers and it's amazing! Not only does the group provide support, information, friendship and fun for members, its impact across statutory services in Liverpool is truly inspiring, with policies covering a range of issues checked by SURF's committee prior to ratification.
One of the most vital activities undertaken by SURF is that members attend all post-diagnostic appointments, ensuring that every person receiving a dementia diagnosis is able to talk to people who understand both the shock of the diagnosis and also what to expect. Crucially, newly diagnosed people and their carers are reassured that it is possible, with the right help, support and understanding, to live well with dementia and that life can and does go on.
I could go on and on, but just want to say that I'm more determined than ever to work towards establishing a Brecon SURF group, with guidance and support from Tommy and Joyce Dunne and Gina Shaw. Tommy and Gina are currently co-chairs of the Liverpool group and could not be more welcoming and encouraging. Tommy's wife Joyce is warm, practical and wise - no surprise that she's shortlisted in the Merseyside Women of the Year awards!
