A new initiative has recently started under the umbrella of Brecon Dementia Friendly community.
Sarah Harman, an experienced voice practitioner, and two volunteers are working in partnership with Morgannwg House, a nursing home in Brecon, to run a series of eight Music and Memories sessions within the care home setting. These sessions include the use of songs, objects and picture to stimulate memory, discussion and engagement. Training involving care staff and relatives to explain the purpose of the project, and ensure continuity between sessions was well received. Those who attended were full of good ideas about items and music they could bring to trigger memories, and there were a lot of positive comments.
At the first session relatives were particularly positive about the increased interaction between the residents. The objects - even the smelly seaweed from Aberystwyth! - worked well in stimulating recollections about holidays long past. And the singing of 'Didn't we have a lovely time, the day we went to Bangor' got everyone singing together.
