During the time that our inter-generational project between Llanfaes School and Trenewydd Care Home has been operating, real friendships have grown between the children and residents; Karen Lawrence, head of Llanfaes and I, (Dementia Friends Champion), also value the friendships formed with residents, and so it is such a sad day when one of our friends passes away.
Our friendship with Doris Bowering was very important to us all. She was a real character, but not only was it a genuine pleasure to chat and laugh with her, the children learned such a lot from her, especially regarding her amazing activities in WW11 when she flew spitfires! We also discovered during a painting session in Trenewydd that Doris was a wonderful artist, and although she had stopped painting some time ago, she was happy to take her brushes up again with the children and it was very obvious that her talent was still very much alive.
Doris's death on 12th January 2017 saddened us all, however, we were comforted to know that the children's visits had brought real happiness and fun towards the end of her life, and her lovely family demonstrated their appreciation of this by requesting that mourners who wished to make donations in memory of Doris did so to the Brecon Area Dementia Friendly Community. The love and affection that everyone who knew Doris had for her is reflected in the fact that £500 has been donated in her memory. This is hugely appreciated by the DFC and every penny will be used to fund initiatives aimed at supporting local people living with dementia and their carers. Doris will be remembered with real affection by us all and projects funded in her memory will be a lasting legacy to a very special woman.
